The United States is contemplating the deployment of additional military advisors to Ukraine in response to Russia's advancing forces on the front lines.
On Saturday, the US military disclosed plans to potentially send dozens of military advisors to Ukraine. These advisors would oversee logistics and maintain the weaponry and ammunition provided to Ukrainian forces combating against Russia. They are expected to be stationed at the US embassy in Kiev.
The US House of Representatives approved a long-awaited foreign aid package on Friday, allocating $60.84 billion primarily for Ukraine, along with support for Israel and other allies. The Senate is set to review the aid package for a vote on Tuesday.
Two US officials revealed that a limited number of military personnel have already been rotating through short-term assignments attached to the Kiev embassy, referred to as "onesies and twosies."
While the exact number of additional troops slated for deployment remains unspecified, the officials indicated it could be up to 60 individuals. Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder clarified that these advisors would not engage in combat but would offer guidance and support to the Ukrainian government and military.
"Throughout this conflict, the DOD has reviewed and adjusted our presence in-country as security conditions have evolved. Currently, we are considering sending several additional advisers to augment the Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) at the Embassy," Ryder stated.
For operational security reasons, specific personnel numbers were not disclosed.
According to sources familiar with the plans, the new troops will focus primarily on logistics, overseeing the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, and assisting with weapon maintenance for the Ukrainian military.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron hinted at the possibility of European countries sending troops to Ukraine. During a pro-Kiev event in Paris, Macron stated that NATO members should not rule out any options, including deploying troops on Ukrainian soil.
While Russian forces have shown increased momentum in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the crucial need for US support. Zelensky warned of mounting pressure from Russian troops and reiterated his plea for Western allies to supply additional arms and munitions to Ukraine. He believes that with increased military personnel and advanced weaponry, Ukrainian forces could potentially counter the Russian advances.
